Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor

Blind Man Becomes Self-Reliant

Teja Ram s/o Amba Ram, 45 years is residing in the village Baleba of Sheo block in District Barmer and belongs to Suthar community. The lost his vision in childhood following small pox / chicken pox. His parents consulted ophthalmologists many times for recovery of his vision. But he could not get his lost vision. Now he is totally blind.

Economic condition of his family is very poor as he is the head of the family and responsible for livelihood of the family. Teja Ram himself and his old mother are the only members of the family. He could not get married because of blindness. He is blind and mother is too old, so they are not able to do agriculture work. They are depending on the people of the community for their livelihood.

When CES fieldworkers of Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor met him first time during baseline survey, he found that Teja Ram was very disappointed towards his life. He did not know about his rights. He was made aware of his rights that he has equal rights as a normal person has.

Teja Ram came to contact with Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor during baseline survey under CES program. Earlier he was very disappointed and living a difficult life. First of all, he was encouraged and made aware of his rights. He was trained for orientation & mobility and activities of daily living. He was issued medical certificate, bus pass and rail pass.

The CES staff faced so many challenges to do above-mentioned activities. The main problem was to prepare Teja Ram himself to do something for him, as he was very disappointed and did not want to do anything. He was thinking that, he is blind and is unable to do anything. Along with Teja Ram, the people of the village were neither supporting Teja Ram nor our worker. After long efforts, Teja Ram got ready to listen to the CES worker. Then he was made learnt to do his work himself without anybody’s help.

He was interested to do chindi work (preparing rope from piece of cloths) and he was provided the raw material for the same. Now he is preparing the ropes and selling locally. He is not depending on anybody for the daily living activities. Now he is participating in the social functions and living a happy life. He is grateful to MMBA who show the way to live a happy life.
